How to Join a Committee

Printable Page

At breakfasts and lunch meetings there are forms on the tables. To try out a committee, fill in your name and leave it on the table or, if you have suggestions, submit those too. You are encouraged and welcome to contact the committee chairs directly.

Membership Committee - Kristie Lang

The Membership Committee provides leadership and direction to new members and also offers information to those thinking about joining us. We meet who has joined, find out why they joined, and introduce them to the SWN. Part of our role is to prepare and distribute the New Member Kits, introduce guests at breakfasts and lunches, ensure new members get to introduce themselves, and make new member follow-up calls.

Newsletter Committee - Wendy Peters

The Newsletter Committee meets every two months, usually one month prior to the printing of each issue.  If you like talking to women, learning about them, and have a flair for putting their personality into words, we want to meet you. We want the story, We are here to help you with editing and support if you want or need it. Creative souls and those with a knack to inspire members to advertise are definitely welcome here too. The newsletter is a printed sample of the spirit of SWN. Each issue is a rewarding blend of ideas and input seeded from brainstorming and thought from participants. By the way - anyone who is a member can submit an article.

Program Committee - Valerie Adrian

The Program Committee organizes the content of the monthly breakfast and lunch meetings. This includes speakers, topics, networking exercises and member display tables. We have 4 – 5 non-mandatory meetings per year to brainstorm for speakers, topics, networking ideas and to discuss requests and topics that have been submitted. If you want to speak, be sure to submit your proposal.

One committee member organizes the dates and speakers; another verifies the speaker date, topic and receipt of bio prior to the engagement. We compile a list of future speakers and display table hosts to send this out to Membership, the SWN Bulletin, Web Site and Newsletter.

Speakers have the option of putting a summary of their presentation in the next newsletter.

The Display Table is an opportunity to promote your business or service and is chosen by draw at each meeting for the next month. You must be in attendance to win the draw.

This committee selects the venues for the luncheons, breakfasts and chooses the Christmas Charity recipient annually through the Expression of Interest (EOI) process.

We work to balance topics, speakers and networking to attract new members and keep current members interested. We accept topics/speakesr and schedule at the appropriate opportunity.

Resource - Brenda Strelioff

The Resource Committee was initiated when we published the resource book. Now that the resource book is available online, we have changed our focus.

Our committee assists with greeting duties at regular meetings, we maintain the social media presence on Facebook and Linked In, and we facilitate Member Orientation Sessions. The Orientation sessions are small group meetings which provide an overview of the SWN organization in an informal gathering. We assist members in their understanding of how the SWN operates, what tools are available to them to promote their business and how to network more effectively.

Treasurer’s Committee Bev Roth

WHO SAYS ACCOUNTANTS ARE BORING? Not in the Saskatoon Women’s Network they are not. We have the best job ever, we get to meet everyone in the Network at one time or another and Marilyn Grose, our administrative assistant, and her staff do most of our work. Basically, if you like to put a face with a name and enjoy meeting the ladies of the network… joining the treasurer’s committee is the place for you.

DO I NEED SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE? No, all you have to do is count money and count tickets; you don’t even have to be able to add or multiply because that is in the hands of Marilyn and her staff. Please
consider joining the treasurer’s committee, it is easy and fun to meet everyone, you may have to eat lunch or breakfast a little late but it is not very often if we have enough people on the committee.

Special Events Committee Sarah Dutka

Without a doubt, the Special Events Committee is a fun committee to be part of. Our committee organizes the social events for the SWN during the year, with the exception of the Vacation Dinner and the AGM. We plan and organize events such as the Golf Tournament, Christmas Party, Blingo!

You don’t need special experience with planning events you just need to know how to have fun! We
don’t require that you play a role in every event. If you can only commit to one or two events that is fine. Some jobs that require assistance include décor, registration & ticket sales, meal and beverage planning.

Committee meetings are held approximately once a month. A lot can be done through email, but
face to face meetings are best for brainstorming ideas. These meetings are a great way to be actively involved in the network.

Vacation Dinner Committee Katie Riley
The Vacation Dinner is largest event of the year for the Saskatoon Women’s Network. It is is attended by over 500 women and is held usually in October. Planning begins for the next year’s dinner shortly after the dinner is held and starts going full force in May when the new director is appointed.

There are at least 20-30 members on this committee to ensure success. There are many
components to this committee. There is something for everyone to participate in – prizes; decorating; entertainment; advertising; food and beverage; and ticket sales. Some of the members are only available to participate on the day of the event and that's great!

We have usually 2 meetings per month in the 3-4 months preceding the dinner. Other sub-committees (like prizes; and decorating) sometimes have their own meeting schedule.  All  ideas are discussed and appreciated. When planning the most fabulous event of the year our motto is “If we’re not having Fun – we’re not doing it right!!

Web site Committee  Marilyn St Marie

The Website Committee oversees the SWN Web site. We insure that the information is timely and up to date.  The membership profiles and calendar administration are the main focus of the day to day activities.  Being a member of the website committee involves following up with assigned duties and we get much accomplished via email and phone. Future involvement in the committee will include advertising, profile proofing and approving access to site and calendar updating. without attending the meetings. We are closely involved with all the committees and volunteers are needed to update the web site in their various areas so that the members and potentail members can be updated easily.
