Memory Box Program

Our Charity Luncheon was held on December 13th. Thanks to the generosity of our members, we are able to donate $706.00 to the Memory Box Program.

When a child dies in hospital, parents suffer the physical loss of their child, which is devastating. What they take away from the hospital and death experience are memories. The purpose of a memory box is to create an opportunity for healing memories to be made. They hold keepsakes such as photographs, footprints, hospital bracelets and memory cards. Approximately 100 boxes are needed per year by the perinatal crisis support team at the Royal University Hospital Birthing Unit. This team assists families who have experienced the loss of a baby through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, still birth and neonatal death.

The launch of the Memory Box program began Tuesday March 11, 1997. Saskatchewan Lodge 16 Masons presented a handcrafted, wooden memory box to Saskatoon Health District service providers and announced a commitment to provide an ongoing supply to the Maternal/Child Centre’s perinatal crisis support program. Moved by its simplicity and therapeutic value, they offered to build the boxes and donate them as needed.

There is a hope this Memory Box Program can extend to more communities in Saskatchewan.
